The Yunique runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box and should be upgradeable to the latest 6.0 Marshmallow when it is released. The measurements of the device is 134.5 x 67.5 x 8.3 mm and weighs just 128 grams for easy flaunting. The battery is a pretty impressive 2000 mAh one that powers the Yunique for more than a day of normal use.

The biggest feature on this powerful device is that it supports 4G LTE. Given the price range of the Yunique, features like 4G support and a Snapdragon processor are a rarity but it looks like Micromax has found a common point between affordability and functionality yet again.

Are Selfie Phones the Future of Smartphones?

Everywhere you look, people seem to be obsessed with selfies. Clicking selfies is the new trend and apparently, everyone, right from elders to youngsters seem to be catching on. So much so, that several leading smartphone brands have geared up and released special phones that are aimed at clicking selfies. HTC released the HTC One Eye, Oppo came out with the innovative N1 and Micromax released a special Selfie phone altogether. Not wanting to lag behind, Samsung has now released two special models which hope to capture the imagination of the selfie obsessed crowd – Samsung Galaxy J5 and Samsung Galaxy J7.

Samsung-Galaxy-J5

These are special mid price ranged smartphones that aim to help people capture great selfies. Released under the J series in only China for now, these smartphones come with your typical mid price ranged smartphone spec sheet. The Galaxy J5 sports a 5 inch screen, and packs in a quad core Snapdragon 410 processor that’s been clocked at 1.2 GHz. The RAM is an in-between 1.5 GB and the internal storage is a respectable 16 GB, with a slot for a microSD card that can go up to 128 GB. The software on this device is the latest Android 5.1 OS, skinned with Samsung’s own TouchWiz UI. Most importantly, coming to the camera, the J5 offers a 13 MP main camera, along with a flash and a respectable 5 MP front camera. Available in black, white and gold, in simple words, the Samsung Galaxy J5 offers what is considered regular and expected fare from mid price ranged smartphones nowadays.

Coming to the slightly more expensive counterpart, the J7 comes with slightly better specs, though they are not exceptionally ahead of the J5. The screen of the J7 is slightly larger, as it spans 5.5 inches and under the hood of this device, you will find a powerful octa core Snapdragon 615 chipset that’s been clocked at 1 GHz. The RAM is once again an in-between 1.5 GB, while the device packs in 16 GB of internal storage, with a microSD card slot, which can go up to 128 GB. The camera offered is surprisingly the same as that seen in the J5, as it is a 13 MP main camera, along with a flash and a respectable 5 MP front camera. Once again, available in black, white and gold, the Samsung Galaxy J7 is nothing but a slightly upgraded version of the J5.

These phones were intentionally released together, so that users can have the choice of buying whichever phone they wish, according to size, specs and their budget. Whether or not phones like these will get the required visibility in the sea of mid price ranged smartphones released by several brands, especially Samsung, is something that only time will tell. For now, if people want the option of a good selfie phone, accompanied by decent specs, then the J series of smartphones by Samsung is a good enough option to consider.

Is an Educational Tab the Answer to Kids’ Problems?

Parents are a troubled lot these days. They always want the best for their kids, yet their kids are busy with their peers and other effects of society.  In the midst of television shows that are becoming increasingly violent and tablets that offer unrestricted access to kids, perhaps among the latest electronic gadgets what kids really need is a special tablet exclusively for kids.

kid-with-tablet

Answering the call for need for such a device is the new Micromax Canvas Tabby P469, a tablet that is aimed at kids, being both creative and educational. This tablet offers special games and apps that are aimed at increasing the knowledge of kids, like special spelling games and pictures of fruits and alphabets. It is also aimed at slightly bigger kids, as it lets your kid paint and indulge in other fun activities as well. It also comes with a special bumper case that aims to let you keep in upright when watching videos, and which also protects the tab, in case your kid accidentally drops it.

However, this tablet won’t be an investment exclusively for kids. It is an Android tablet that can serve parents as well. You can monitor it by not only creating your own private profile on it but can make up to three different profiles for your different kids, depending on their age and likes, so that each of their content is safeguarded from the other. You can also put a time manager for your kids, so that they don’t spend too much time on the tablet.

However does the Micromax Canvas Tabby P469 really manage to answer all the questions? Is a kids tab all that kids really need? Kids nowadays aren’t as innocent as they used to be. Hence, you can easily expect even the youngest of them to break codes and easily shift into adult mode of the tablet. Plus, why does the answer to everyone’s problems have to come from among the latest electronic gadgets anyway? Wasn’t there a time when parents grew up without any such devices? Wasn’t there a time when the best way to pass time was to actually go out in the sun and play and tire ourselves out, so that we could then go back home fully exhausted but satisfied that the day was full of fun?

Nowadays, the only playing that kids know is when it comes to playing video games on the phone and tablets. Playing football means using just your thumbs and nothing else. Maybe this needs to stop altogether. Maybe what we really need is kids to be kids and remember their childhood as one where they spent most of it running outside, with their mothers then tending to their scratched knees and bruised legs. However, till we go back to such a time, there will always be something to choose from the latest electronic gadgets and if you still wish to at least choose the lesser of the evils present, a kid tab is a good start.

Has India Finally Arrived?

There was a time when mobile phones came in the option of two brands; it was either  Yes, Samsung was the undisputed king of mobile phones in Asia. Its position was virtually unchallenged for years. That was of course till the advent of smartphones. Over the past two or three years, there has been an explosion of smartphone brands that have all fought for space in the latest smartphone news. People were surprised when a country like India, a long time loyalists of the two pioneer brands, started offering options to its users. The biggest game changer in India today is undoubtedly . Micromax is a brand that people mocked when it came up with its ambitious Canvas series. However, this brand proved everyone wrong, with phenomenal sales for a start up. After a year, it even managed to rope in the highly popular Wolverine star, Hugh Jackman as its brand ambassador. This was at a time when other better known brands were content with being advertised by Indian stars.

The different handsets that made Micromax a household name included handsets like the Canvas Knight and Canvas Turbo. These are smartphones that came with 13MP and 16MP cameras respectively at a time when even leading handsets were making their users settle for 8-12 MP cameras, among other mediocre mobile specifications. Several of Micromax’s handsets made it to the latest smartphone news, making people aware of the scope of what this brand had to offer.

Yes, Micromax’s run in India has been the stuff that dreams are made of. From an unknown novice to a brand that has proven to be a saviour for people on a budget, Micromax has come a long way indeed. Currently, Micromax is the tenth largest smartphone seller in the world. However, with the kind of competition in the smartphone market today, this brand still has a long way to go before really making a lasting impression in the masses. It is still a relatively unknown brands beyond India’s borders and to have a global reach, it needs to really up its game and come up with unique smartphone features that will help it garner global attention.
